Totus Copy 1.0

This Manual Can Also be Found Online at

www.dragonforged.com/totuscopy.htm

What is Installed and Where:

1) Totus Copy is a standalone application with no outside dependencies, if you delete the application it will uninstall the software.

How to Use:

1) Select a failing hard drive or directory on a failing hard drive with the browse button for the source

2) Select a destination for the files to be placed, you will want to create a new folder on a separate hard drive for these files. Make sure you do not recover to the root of another startup volume.

3) Select any options that you want under the options tab, you can not change options once a copy has begun.

4) Press "Copy" and wait for it to finish. It may take several hours a gigabyte on a failing hard drive.

Demo Version Limits

If you have not purchased a copy of Totus Copy you are limited by the demo version. Once you have transfered 500 MBs of data the application will pause and ask you for a serial number. If you enter a serial number it will continue uninterrupted. Otherwise you can safely end your transfer there.

Trouble Shooting & FAQ:

Q: Why can't I recover to and from the same device.

A: Totus Copy is intended to be used on a failing hard drive. Copying data to a failing hard drive is never recommended.

Q: Why can't I copy from a startup disk?

A: To maximize the success of any data recovery you want to limit the amount of use a disc has, running software on a drive you are attempting to recover data from is not a good idea.

Q: I told Totus Copy not to copy Applications and/or Invisible files yet it still does.

A: We use a non-intrusive method for determining if a file is invisible or an application. We do this because we do not want to cause anymore read/write damage to the drive then needed. Sometimes on failing drives we may fail to detect something is invisible or an application.

Q: Why does it take so long to copy files?

A: A failing hard drive may have any number of problems, these are commonly represented by slow copy speeds. If a file is taking a very long time to transfer it is most likely located on a failing section of the hard drive. Please be patient, if the file is damaged Totus Copy will transfer as much of it as possible. We have yet to see Totus Copy freeze up on a transfer in any testing we have preformed.

Q: Totus Copy seems to be copying files in a very strange order

A: Yes, it is. Our algorithm is designed to copy in the safest manner possible, this method goes against the typically file order you will see. Totus copy will start at the root of the drive and work deeper one layer at a time.

Q: My drive does not mount will Totus Copy still work?

A: Unfortunately no. Totus Copy requires that your drive mounts. However you may be able to use software such as Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, or Disk Utility to temporarily mount the drive to transfer data.

Q: Why doesn't Totus Copy give me a progress bar or an estimated time remaining?

A: Two reasons. First you can never estimate the time it will take to transfer data off a failing hard disk. In reality the software does not know what it is copying till it gets to it. We do not scan the entire drive for files before we copy, this is done to minimize damage to the drive.

Q: What does it mean when it says the file was only partially transfered.

A: It means that part of the file was damaged beyond being able to transfer. Try opening this file with several diffrent programs to be able to access the data in it. For example partial photoshop files (PSD) rarely open in Photoshop but preview can typically read them.

Q: Can I use the only copy files of a type option to copy more then one type?

A: At this time no, you may only specify one file type at a time. This feature will most likely be added in a future update.

Q: Why does it take so long to cancel a copy?

A: A copy will not cancel until the current file is finished, if Totus Copy is copying a file slowly it may take some time for it to cancel. Do not attempt to quit Torus Copy while it is transferring data.

Q: Why do I get no such file or directory errors?

A: This is often caused by an alias that points to nothing.

Q: What is the limit of the demo?

A: Totus Copy is limited to transferring 500 MBs in demo mode. Once that limit has been reached you will be given the opportunity to enter a serial number and continue with the data transfer or stop the transfer there.

Q: Why does it seem like the number of files copied is higher then it actually is?

A: Totus Copy counts directories as files.

Q: Where is the log file stored?

A: Once a transfer is complete and you have selected the option to save the log a copy will be stored on the root directory of your startup disk.

Q: Why is Totus Copy not available for Tiger?

A: Totus Copy uses key programming commands that are not available for tiger, at this time there are no Tiger releases planned but check back from time to time.
