CNN has Failed Us

How is it that Britney Spears resting is larger news then a top terrorist being killed? Or even army suicides jumping 20%? What about the gem of the internet failing on two continents? We need to step back and take a look at our values.
But didnt you know she stimulates the economy by 120 million a year?
true and sad at the same time...
Every true american should check out

cnn also failed us when the bush administration recently visited saudi arabia. the cnn.com entry talked about cheery condoleezza having her fave strawberry juice and bush getting oversized "bling" (yes, that's the word cnn used). the bbc.com entry talked about the multi-billion dollar arms agreement set forth by the administration during the visit that could put neighboring countries, including israel, in danger. way to go, american press!
It's gotten pathetic. That a simple screen shot of a major news source passes as biting satire strikes me as sad and hilarious at the same time.
That's CNN now-days. Back when Michael Vick was still all the rage, He had the photo-op posted, but news that the Attorney General of the United States of America was relegated to the same line as the Al Qaeda reference in your shot. It is just amazing where the priorities of so much of the country are, that CNN composes their page the way they do.
How is it that someone who I assume is an educated adult can't tell the difference between "then" and "than"
Re: 4th Grade Teacher
Public education... Same reason you didn't end your question with a "?".
CNN gives the majority of their viewers the news the majority of their viewers want to see. By now you are in a minority to even care about 'important news', and as such it could be said that the values of the country is no longer the values you feel it should have. Fair enough, you are a minority, the country should follow the values of the majority. If you want to change that, whining won't get you anywhere. Either CHANGE the system, or MOVE out.
That's America, that's why
This is just proof of how dumb Americans really are. "Oh, a national threat was just killed 4 minutes ago..., never mind, BRITINY SPEARS is on!" a lot of americans are dumbassas
Its pretty obvious why its like this...
They don't update the front news page every minute, but they update the data in the back end of the website. So I'm guessing that a reporter sent in the terrorist story, and the Brittany Spears front page thing was already there from earlier that day. I'm sure 30 minutes later they changed it and had the top story about the terrorist's death.
Good thing I'm not American.
At least my country still knows what's more important.
cable news has become entertainment tonight and tmz. it's pathetic. points to the dumbing down of our society. idiots are everywhere.
For the American bashers,You are all jealous.
Your country has no values,Hell, it barely even has a GNP.
Gross generalization based on a person's nationality is stupid, and so are you.
Go back to your thatched hut and have a bowl of crybaby soup.
Oh the irony :)
You know this is what they want us to see. This is the Media helping blind us. So the Bush Administration sells us out. The don't care about us one bit. CNN, FOX, all the major media players are only here to help sell us out.
First things first. Many people from other countries (who actually come here) have said America is the best. At a seminar the other day, a Holocaust survivor said that America was the best and no country she has been to is anything compared to it. We are not perfect, but we are the best.
That out of the way--let me try and rationalize this picture.
Britney Spears is a severe threat to the youth of this country. She is corrupting the values of millions and millions of teens. By showing how awful this woman is, maybe people will realize how bad she actually is. Teens will no longer see her as a role model, which will save the future generations of this country.
First off...I'm an American. Specifically, I'm from Iowa City, IA in the Midwest.
To the other Americans who keep saying "We're the best... We're the best.":
Will you please knock that shit off please and show some class? I think I speak for most educated Americans when I say this.
The United States has a lot of nice, unique things about it, yes but one of the glaring issues with a lot of our citizens is an extremely narrow world-view. If you've spent a day outside of the US and lived as other world citizens lived, you'd see this.
So in the interest of not making the rest of us look like ignorant, arrogant assholes...
Shut. Up.
Thank you...
Oh... and while I'm at it...
To those of you non-Americans who say Americans are all stupid. Don't paint us all with the same brush.
I don't use CNN, so I know little of their website. Perhaps the image and story changes? Runs through the list or something? I've definitely seen that on some sites.
I realize that such a thing would ruin all of these condemnations of America, so I'm sure this will be ignored.
I really don't buy the selling for majority argument. I refuse to believe that most people would rather hear about terrorists threats than B.S. (Brittany Spears is what I mean, of course). But I also believe that people learn to want what people are offering. That is, if we continue to follow the B.S. story, then more and more people will want to know what's happening (the theory that people don't like to begin something without knowing how it'll end). But we never began following the story of Americans in Afganistan or the real story of Americans in Iraq.
I also don't think Americans are ignorant. I'm American and have lived in many parts of this country (only the East coast, though). Does anyone out there believe that the least educated in this country are any worse off than the least educated French or Belgian? In fact, the time I've spent abroad and with foreign students studying in America shows that most of the world is as ignorant of America as America is of them. While Bush's approval rates were below 30%, many of the Germans and British I spoke with believe that ALL Americans support Bush. How is this different than thinking that all French people are peace-loving pacifists? And speaking of the French, they've been one of the most ethic- and cultural-centric nations of the West for several hundred years (read some 18th-19th century French works if you disagree). Mostly, non-Americans use their ignorance of the U.S. to condemn Americans as being ignorant, close-minded, or what-have-you.
Maybe it all comes down to this: The people who care what news they're getting will look beyond the front page, look beyond the 'biggest headline' and get to the issues that matter. But those who have superficial (or no) interest in such matters will read whatever story first grabs their attention. And since no one from the first group will read the B.S. story, and only those from the first group, why not put the meaningless story first? It's the only way it'll get read.
@Mark: 120 million dollars is nothing. We spent 10-20 times that on Easter candy every year (source, Economist Magazine: "The World in 2008, page 34)
I have a somewhat different perspective on this, one that I think many here are simply overlooking.
I grew up around the news industry, and I have family members who currently work at major news organizations. For the most part, those involved in the news industry are interested in keeping people informed. The change over the past twenty or so years has not been a matter of "dumbing" the news down, but rather the means by which it is delivered.
In the old days, television news was considered a "loss-leader". Stations spent more on delivering news than they would draw in from advertising revenues. While news broadcasts lacked much of the "fluff" we see today, they also tended to lack the viewing numbers which would attract advertisers. The problem became, then, attracting larger numbers of viewers, not only to make the news profitable, but also to ensure that a greater number of people were well informed.
While we like to complain about the giant "Britney Spears" headline, the fact remains that the news stories about Al Qaeda, the Internet Failure, the IRS, and the army suicides are still there. It's marketing. The idea is that the Britney Spears article might get someone to notice the articles alongside it and say, "Top Al Qaeda Terrorist Killed? Wow, that sounds serious... I'd better check that out." In the same sense, the entertainment value found in modern news casts keeps people viewing when they might be otherwise inclined to change the channel.
There is no conspiracy to dumb down the country - to the contrary, the goal is to ensure that greater numbers of people whom otherwise wouldn't be paying attention are informed.
Someone much smarter than me once said that we get the government we deserve. I submit that we also get many other aspects of society that we deserve, including, apparently, our news. If enough of us just simply stopped using CNN as a primary source, and started frequenting the BBC instead, or NPR, or some other source more deserving of our trust, CNN's ratings would be negatively affected. Seeing this, they presumably would take steps to try and increase ratings. Part of that effort would be to find out where viewers have gone, and why. This would lead them to the conclusion that many of us want "real" news, rather than infotainment, and they would change their priorities accordingly.
You want less infotainment? Make it happen yourself, instead of waiting for someone else to solve your problem for you. Or else (gasp) ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES FOR YOUR ACTIONS, and shut up.
'Nuff said.
I wouldn't say all Americans are dumbasses .... but then again , how the hell did a retard like Bush become President? I mean that kinda speaks for itself...
I, too, would hesitate to call ALL americans dumbasses, but I would make the observation that MOST of them think they are right ALL of the time and refuse to listen to alternative points of view. Creationists for example. If you look at the underlying principles there, they are present all over the world but more noticeable in the usa - a willingness to believe what you are told without question, the belief that if you hear it on the news or in print, its true, and that what you believe to be true will ALWAYS be true no matter what, even when presented with blindingly obvious proof.
What am I supposed to do as an American? I live in a country with 300,000,000 other people. I am not a member of the majority, but that doesn't matter, because enough people are. So I make my own choices, skirt network television, avoid amero-centric news sources, do everything I can to detach myself from the culture and policies I disagree with, and for what? I'm stuck in the middle of a giant, ego maniacal bully the rest of the world hates more and more every day. Already traveling abroad is more and more treacherous, more and more difficult, even in "friendly" countries, for all the open scorn an American accent invites. America is a big country, with a lot of people of so many different personalities, but outside the U.S. all Americans are fat, stupid, and arrogant, among other, less pleasant personality traits. What am I, as one of many Americans who actually want to get along with the rest of the world, supposed to do?
For the American bashers,You are all jealous.
Your country has no values,Hell, it barely even has a GNP.

Ahaha... I'm still giggling about this one.
"Your country has no values": It's called the "Geneva" Convention for a reason.
"It barely even has a GNP": Been to Dubai? (Sorry, silly question.)
"Gross generalisation" etc etc: hopefully the irony is self evident. Well *really*, hopefully it's deliberate, but I've lost all faith in the internet on that score. Even if this guy is trolling, there's plenty of people (in many countries) who would agree wholeheartedly with him, which kind of kills the humour.
